    INTRODUCTION

The #SHAKEmob Challenge is a fun way to teach, reinforce, and practice earthquake preparedness emergency skills. After completing this program, children and staff will have the tools that can help prevent injuries and save lives.

    About Rocket Rules

Rocket Rules teaches emergency preparedness and safety awareness to children K-3. From natural disasters to manmade tragedies, Rocket the Safety Spokesdog delivers life-saving messages in a kid-friendly way. We give children response skills to help them make smart, split-second decisions when it matters most. Teaming up with leaders in emergency management, educators, and childhood psychology,  we create age-appropriate content that’s vetted by the experts. The Rocket Rules library of videos, books and activities is the early education go-to resource for schools,  fire departments, law enforcement agencies,  emergency managers and community organizations.

    About the Great Shakeout

The GreatShakeOut earthquake drills, which began in 2008, are an annual opportunity for people in homes, schools, and organizations to practice what to do during earthquakes, and to improve preparedness. These events are made possible through a collaboration between several agencies including the USGS. Millions of people participate in the Great ShakeOut each year.

    Outcomes of the #SHAKEmob Challenge

    • Students and staff are better prepared to respond during earthquakes
    and other emergencies.

    • The Expanded Learning community raises its conscience and communication
about safety protocols, policies and best practices.

    • Programs deepen their partnerships with community emergency management,
first responders and the school day.

    • Families join and contribute to the safety conversation.

    SHAKEMOB ACTIVITIES

These turn-key activities can be completed in under 20 minutes and require minimal materials and preparation. Directions and hand-outs have been included within each downloadable, printable lesson plan. Reflection Questions are provided for discussion and deeper understanding.

Through a proven interdisciplinary framework designed to promote muscle memory, students explore earthquake safety through kinesthetic, hands-on games. Vetted by experts in emergency management and early childhood education, all lessons are aligned with National Health Education Standards.

Perfect for transition time, these activities are easily adaptable, can be done indoors or outside, as well as modified for both small and large groups.

    #SHAKEmob DANCE

Not a dancer? Don’t worry! Never done anything like this before? It’s OK. We’ve got you covered.

The goal is to HAVE FUN while learning and reinforcing life-saving skills. Your job is not to “teach” students the dance (unless that’s a skill in your wheelhouse, in which case, go for it!) Your role is to create a positive environment where learning about emergency preparedness and earthquake safety is both important and fun.

The DANCE VIDEO is how your students will learn the dance. Just make sure they have plenty of room to move freely, play the video and follow along. Also included is a CHOREOGRPAPHY GUIDE that names all the dance steps in order, corresponding with the lyrics.

Most steps have ample  repetition and many of the movements are borrowed from popular dance crazes like the  Floss and Gangnam Style. The choreography sequences help build locomotor skills and can be modified to fit students ability and mobility levels.

FUN FACT: The Safety Dancers in the dance video aren’t Hollywood actors – they’re real kids who had only three official rehearsals before filming this! We did this on purpose to prove that YOU CAN DO IT!
